Abstract

Scientists face a continuously increasing amount of scientific production; thus, effective ways to access scientific publications and related data plays a major role in the scientific process. Scholarly web-based repositories have succeed as a dissemination platform for scientific publications; however, most of the information remains locked up in discrete documents, which are poorly interconnected to one another, to relevant databases, and to the Web itself. On the one hand, within the Web of Data, scientific publications can take advantage of online resources, data bases, and interconnectedness.  On the other hand, researchers can benefit from social interaction and collaborative efforts. This thesis aims to introduce models, services, and scenarios for collaborative environments making use of the connectivity tissue provided by the Linked Open Data and annotation-based systems in Life Sciences. This thesis focuses on three main topics: (i) structuring annotations on collaborative environments, (ii) structuring scientific publications within the Web of Data, (iii) using structured scientific publications for knowledge discovery
